1989, Hu Yaobang's death triggered off an anti-profiteering and anti-corruption student movement striking for democracy and freedom. The students expressed their discontent with the government through peaceful demonstrations and hunger strikes, however, the government characterized the campaign as unrest. In order to maintain the stability of the regime, the army deployed tanks and live ammunition, killing unarmed innocent people.

24 years passed, the incident has not yet been rehabilitated, and the behest of those martyrs has not been reached. Even though most of the college students in our generation did not experience the 1989 pro-democracy movement, we can clearly understand what happened in 1989 through sharing and historical records. In the candlelight vigil, we not only mourn for the victims, but also show the Communist Party that we are determined to fight for freedom and democracy, and that will not be forgotten.

We now invite all our members to attend this year's candlelight vigil that would be held in Victoria Park.

Date: June 4

Sixteen years since the handover of Hong Kong’s sovereignty to China, Hong Kong citizens still do not have the right to vote for their leaders, and it seems the road to universal suffrage is still far beyond our scope. In January 2013, Professor Tai Yiu-Ting (from Faculty of Law, HKU) proposed the “Occupy Central Movement” which is a campaign to fight for universal suffrage by means of civil disobedience and it gradually becomes an ad hoc political issue within the society.

Topic of discussion:
the Occupy Central Movement — Referendum or Civil Disobedience? The Democratic Progress of Hong Kong — Present and Future

Date: 7th May, 2013 (Tuesday)
Time: 19:00 – 21:30
Venue: Citi Lecture Theatre (LTA)
Language: Cantonese

Guest Speakers:
Prof. TAI Yiu-Ting - University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Law
Prof. SING Ming - Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, School of Humanities and Social Science
Mr. Albert HO - Legislative Councilor
Mr. Chan Shu Fai - Secretary-General of Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS)

Interested students can reserve seats through prior registration on below google spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1PuHNkIPBa2RJvY1VMD9XoM08OvillAk1XqldjESAu-Y/viewform and could enter the venue at 18:30-18:45 before the forum starts.

HKUSTSU is going to hold a film showing session to commemorate the people who sacrificed for the freedom of others.

Tank Man is a documentary describing a bloody history 24 years ago, a man stood in front of a column of tanks to stop them from moving forward. Although his bravery could not change the end of the story, he left a trace for us to recognize the dark age of the political system in China.

We once again invite all SU members to join this meaningful event and hope students can get familiar with things happening around us.

We are here to invite all of you to join the visit to the second temporary June Fourth Memorial Museum. We wish that our students could be more familiar with the history of our country and could participate in this meaningful event. The temporary June Fourth Memorial Museum was first established last year, attracting almost 20.000 visitors over a month and a half. This year, it is jointly organized by the Alliance and the City University of Hong Kong Students' Union. Housed in City University's campus, this year's museum is even more accessible and comprehensive.

Dear all,

We are writing to inform you with great sadness that a student in our school, Mr. WONG Wing Ho, Danny, passed away on 29 June, 2012 due to health problems. To provide assistance to Danny's family at this difficult time, we and the Physics Students' Society are now launching a donation campaign to raise money for the family. The donation counter is placed at the Atrium near elevator on Jul 12, 13 and 16, 2012.

Further details about Danny can be found in the following email sent by the school:

"Dear Students and Colleagues,

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved student Mr. WONG Wing Ho, Danny (黃永豪) on 29 June 2012. Wing Ho spent his last days in the company of his caring and devoted parents, close relatives and dearest friends in the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Wing Ho’s health problems started in March 2012. Despite his illness, Wing Ho persevered in the past few months to complete his third year of UG study at HKUST. He obtained the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics with second class honors, Division I. Due to his very critical condition, his diploma was issued and delivered to him in the intensive care unit of the hospital. We are proud of Wing Ho’s academic achievement and his courageous fight against the illness. Wing Ho’s determination to succeed despite his deteriorating health condition is an inspiration to all of us at HKUST.

Wing Ho’s untimely death is a devastating loss for his family, which is shared by friends and faculty at HKUST who had the honor to know him. A memorial service will be held from 10:30 am to noon on Sunday, July 22nd in the Ceremony Room (靜念堂), G/F, Main Clinical Block and Trauma Center, Prince of Wales Hospital, 30-32, Ngan Shing Street, Shatin, N.T.

Wing Ho did not come from a well-off family. We learn from the parents that he had to rely on Government financial assistance to pay for tuition fee in the last two years. Originally, his father planned to retire after the graduation of Wing Ho. This plan has to be deferred in spite of his father’s deteriorating health. The death of Wing Ho is no doubt an added burden to the already dire financial situation of the family, given that his younger brother is still in secondary school.

To provide assistance to Wing Ho’s family at this difficult time, the School of Science, HKUST Students’ Union and the Physics Students’ Society decided to launch a donation campaign on campus, with the hope that this would help alleviate part of their burden. If you wish to show your support, please send in your donation through one of the following ways:

1. By Cash
A counter will be set up at the Atrium by Students’ Union and the Physics Students’ Society to collect cash donationson 12, 13 and 16 July from 12 noon to 3 pm.

Cash donations are also accepted at the front counter of the Finance Office (Room 5414 on 5/F, via Lifts 17-18) during office hours (9:00 am - 12:45 pm and 2:00 pm - 5:15 pm Monday through Friday, except for public holidays).

2. By Cheque
Cheques should be made payable to "The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology" and addressed to the Finance Office, HKUST, Clear Water Bay, Kowloon. On the back of the cheque, please specify, "Donation for the family of Wong Wing Ho". Please also put your name, address and telephone number on the back of the cheque.

3. By direct deposit to special bank accounts
Three special bank accounts have been set up to collect donations from now until 27 July 2012 (Friday). The account name is "The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology" and the account numbers are as follows:

Hang Seng Bank : 361-008071-677
Bank of China : 012-896-1-017333-7
Bank of East Asia : 015-263-10-00009-1

Please fax a copy of the transaction receipt provided by the bank to the Treasury Unit, Finance Office. On the back of the receipt copy, please write clearly your name, address, and telephone number and specify "Donation for the family of WONG Wing Ho". The fax number of Finance Office is 2358-2426.

An official receipt will be issued to the donor on request for donations of HK$100 or above in about two weeks upon receipt of the donation.

Wing Ho will remain in our hearts and will be greatly missed by all of us.

For emotional stress such as grief, depression or anxiety, students please contact Counseling and Development, Student Affairs Office at telephone 2358 6696 or email <counsel@ust.hk>; while staff and family members please call the Vital Employee Service Consultancy counseling hotline 2755 9227.
